What is added sugar?

Any sugar that is added when food is being prepared or processed. Examples are sugar that you put in your coffee or tea, or sugar found in highly processed foods such as sodas, pastries or other baked goods. Watch carefully, companies use sugars addictive behavior to sneakily get you to buy their stuff. You'll find it in foods you never expected such as ketchup!

What is the max amount of sugar you should take?

Everyone agrees that we should limit our sugar intake, however there isn't an exact recommended daily dose. We recommend less than 30grams of sugar per day.

How much added sugar comes from highly processed food in the average diet?

About 90%! That's one of the reasons why we recommend limiting processed foods.

Where does the majority of sugar come from in the average diet?

Sugary drinks such as soda, juice and energy drinks are responsible for 47% of added sugar in your diet.

What are some foods with sneaky added sugars?

  • Shakes, smoothies, and juice—yes, they make these even sweeter.

  • Specialty drinks like flavored lattes and frappés.

  • Breakfast cereals and granolas.

  • Bars like granola bars or protein bars.

  • Flavored milk and milk products like flavored yogurts.

  • Canned fruit (packed in juice or syrup).

  • Condiments, marinades, and spreads like ketchup, teriyaki sauce, and chutney.

  • Salad dressings like French, Caesar, or sesame.

  • Pasta sauces like tomato sauce or Alfredo sauce.

  • Premade soups.

  • Nut butters—read the labels.

  • Dried fruits—some have added sugar, so be sure to check.

How sugar is labeled on labels and ingredients list (yes they get even more sneaky with it).

When you see these ingredients, treat it like sugar.

  • Corn syrup.

  • Dextrose.

  • Honey.

  • Fructose.

  • High-fructose corn syrup.

  • Lactose.

  • Malt syrup (milkshake, anyone?) 

  • Maltose.

  • Maple syrup.

  • Molasses.

  • Nectars.

  • Sucrose.

Is there an easy way to stay clear of added sugars?

Yes! stay away from processed foods and drinks! And yes, we know this isn't realistic and not fun at all. Let's be honest, you're going to have pasta sauce, sweet dressings and ketchup in your house. But being mindful gives you an edge!
